Ants in Malaysia — identify what you’ve seen.

The Most Common Household Ant

Domestic Black Ants.

The small, dark ants most Malaysian homeowners encounter — usually more of a nuisance than a real threat.

Black Ants — the everyday kitchen visitor.

The term “Black Ants” typically covers several species of ants that are dark in color. In many regions, including Malaysia, this term is often used colloquially to refer to the common black garden ant (Lasius niger) and other similar species.

These ants are usually found in outdoor settings but can enter homes in search of food — particularly sugary substances and food debris left on counters or in bins.

Key Points
  • Habitat: Build their nests in soil, under stones, or within cracks in pavement. Garden ants often nest outdoors but will forage indoors.
  • Diet: Omnivorous — feeding on sugary substances, other insects, and food debris in human environments.
  • Impact: Generally considered less of a nuisance compared to other ant species. They do not pose significant health risks, though they can contaminate food.
