A Penang-based grandmother discovered a significant portion of her savings had been ruined by pests, only after her grandson retrieved the money she had stored in cookie tins under her bed.

A succession of videos, shared anonymously on the Facebook group Penang News Group last week, demonstrated that the elderly woman, who was sceptical about banking, opted to stash piles of her savings in metal tins.

The man in the videos, communicating in Hokkien, mentioned that the amount of money was so large, he had already spent an entire night sorting through them.

“So, I extracted all of this last night and discovered they were all slightly gnawed,” he commented, while showcasing a considerable stack of RM100 bills.

He mentioned each stack, bound by a rubber band, constituted approximately RM10,000 in cash. He counted around 23 stacks, which equated to an astounding total of RM230,000.
